We believe that it is vital to leave some areas in their natural state in order to retain the bio-diversity of the native flora and fauna. We also water smaller areas of the native grasses for the use and convenience of these natural creatures which, in return, honour us with their presence.
It is intense farming but very rewarding. Once we saw a snake-ball during the Wet...just like on the TV..... and we rescued a Blue-winged kookaburra that still follows me around whenever I start the tractor. It and its family nest in a hollow tree not 20 yards from our door. Many wild birds come to the dam....and wallabies, kangaroos and other smaller creatures.
“ We have lived in this country for 25 years creating an animal refuge and a self-subsistent type multi-variety orchard and small crops “garden” and we have found that simply everything grows. Even in the worst of the country, there are significant pockets of very good soil to cultivate and more that can be improved using the accumulated silt in all the gullies. This area is one vast water-shed with an abundance of suitable dam sites in all directions. This is the sort of country that Peter Andrews was referring to when he says it is time to regenerate the creeks and green up Australia using his concept of "natural sequence farming"…
